THE TOWN

Many vacation rentals in San Juan del Sur are advertised under “San Juan del Sur” but are located far away from the town of SJDS. Some are built at the top of mountains, or in secluded beaches.

Why? San Juan del Sur is the name of a town, as well as the name of a municipality.

The town is relatively small. The municipality is over 400 square Km, and has many miles of coast along the Pacific ocean.

Our Casa 72 villa is right in the middle of the town. You can walk everywhere, day or night.

If you’re looking for convenience and being immersed in the lively everyday activities of a small Nicaraguan tourist town, then staying at Casa 72 is what you’re looking for, for your best San Juan del Sur vacation.

From the Managua airport, the ride takes about 2.5 hours. You can rent a car at the airport, or use a transfer service.

San Juan del Sur is a small town. Our house is located right downtown, and you can walk to restaurants, stores, the beach, bars, ATMs, banks, church, etc.

Once you get to San Juan del Sur, and stay at Casa 72, you don´t really need a car.

If you want to go to nearby beaches, you can take a shuttle, a taxi, rent a motorcycle, or if you wish, rent a car for a day or two.

There are at least four car rental companies en San Juan del Sur, including Dollar, Alamo, National and Easy rent a car.

I can point to two transfer companies that have good web reviews, travel regularly the San Juan del Sur-Managua route, can be booked online and have English-speaking personell. They are:

They both have offices located two blocks from Casa 72, and have door-to-door service 24/7.

There are several car rental companies that have agencies on both sides of the Costa Rica/Nicaragua border at Peñas Blancas.

They basically give you a car registered in the country you will be visiting, and they help you transfer your luggage to the new car.

National is one:

National Costa Rica
National Nicaragua

Another one is Alamo:
Alamo international service

It’s a good idea to have a cell phone during your visit.

You can buy a local SIM card and airtime at the airport, gas stations, grocery stores, etc., and use it with your personal cell phone. Make sure your phone is unblocked. That means it can use SIM cards from carriers other than your original carrier.

You can use your airtime to make calls or to browse the web. If you don’t get a phone, you can ask store clerks, taxi drivers, etc. to rent you their phone, and most of them will probably do. You should expect to pay from 30 to 50 cents per minute. There is a pharmacy at the airport that offers this service.

Casa 72 has a landline you can use to make unlimited local calls to other landlines, or to receive calls from cell phones or from overseas.

There are all kinds of small stores and boutiques in SJDS: Souvenirs, ice cream, fresh fish and seafood, groceries, boutique bakery, candy, cigar store, bookstore, drugstores, surf shops, ukelele store, fishing supplies, hardware stores, etc.

  • Maderas: 30 minutes
  • Playa Hermosa: 25 minutes
  • Playa Coco: 30 minutes

There are lots of things you can do with your kids. They will love our private swimming pool. Also, the beach is safe, clean and perfect for kids to play in the sand. You can take them to do zip lining, horseback riding, or they can take surfing lessons.
